October 2024 Workshop News
After a busy summer at Abbey Farm, the days are drawing in and the landscape changing to fabulous Autumn colours. Abbotsbury has enjoyed summer with its welcome buzz of visitors. Although the road through Portesham is closed now until early November for essential water supply works, we are open as usual. Abbotsbury Hill has reopened, so access along the coast road from Bridport is clear. Coming from the Dorchester direction involves a diversion via Bishops Road, Hands Lane and in via Back Street to Abbotsbury village. Coming from Weymouth, take the Elworth/Langton Herring Diversion. Sorry if this sounds like some kind of Treasure Hunt but it does work, even if a bit of pain temporarily.
My project with 'Dorset Colourists' has gone really well and we hope soon to announce plans for a joint exhibition. The wider Salon Group that I work with is scheduled to exhibit at The Sherborne in spring. More details to come and certainly lots to look forward to!
Other commitments mean that I will be having a few days away from my Abbotsbury Studio which will be closed from Monday 14th October and reopening Saturday 19th October.
The next mixed media workshop here at Abbey Farm will take inspiration from the works of Cezanne. As my rent, electricity, price of materials etc. have all risen since we started 2 years ago, I have reluctantly had to increase the session price in line, sorry.

10 am – 12.30pm cost £22, materials provided.

Other diary dates are ...
Sunday 24th November Abbotsbury's 'Candles on The Hill' - with the superb Frenchays again singing in St Catherine's Chapel. The following weekend, Saturday 30th November/Sunday 1st December is the Abbey Farm Christmas Fayre with various things happening here and in the Tithe Barn.
Closed days at my Abbey Farm studio are Monday and Wednesday. (Private Viewings can be made by email appointment for anyone who would like to visit on those days).

June 2024 Workshop News
We’ve had an amazing Dorset Art Weeks at Abbey Farm, with visitors to Abbotsbury coming from a wide spread of locations. Many thanks to all who came along and helped make it a very special time.
My highlight was Sunday 9th June when the annual Abbotsbury Open Gardens once more combined with Abbotsbury Landscape Art Festival. Hats off to John Meaker for making the day go with a bang – the Tithe Barn being home to an exhibition of the artists’ works and housing a great evening with music, judging and presentations. I was so thrilled to be placed second in the public vote with my piece ‘Foxgloves and Echium Leaves’.
The overall winner was Rachel Sargent.
The Abbotsbury Landscape Art Festival Week continues until Sunday 16th: details at www.abbotsburyarts.co.uk with John running daily drop in Landscape painting sessions and evening talks. Abbotsbury Arts will be a future showcase for various events and artists including Art in Abbotsbury and featuring artists from across Dorset.
Watch for news soon on another artist opening a studio in Abbotsbury – we are fast becoming a centre for art lovers to see a great selection of artists and their works – all very exciting.
The next mixed media workshop will be on a floral theme:
Tuesday 9th July 10 am – 12.30 pm cost £20, materials provided.

Closed days at my studio are Monday and Wednesday. (Private Viewings can be made by email appointment for anyone who would like to visit the studio on those days).

May 2024 Workshop News
It seems no time since I was writing the April newsletter. Time flies: it’s been a busy month and there were some fabulous works produced by everyone who came along to the mixed media Portrait session. It’s always a thrill to see what students achieve in a few hours.
May has got off to a flying start with a couple of welcome dry and sunny days over the Bank Holiday. I’ve even enjoyed a couple of Plein Air painting days, although admittedly they weren’t totally dry!
International visitors to Abbotsbury and the Jurassic Coast have begun to find us again at Abbey Farm. I was thrilled to have sold a piece to a collector from New York and am brushing up on my German and French greetings again.
Time to squeeze in another bookable mixed media workshop ahead of Art Weeks:
the theme is ‘Fixings and Fastenings’ (think buckles, knots, padlocks, bolts…)
Tuesday 21st May 10 am – 12.30pm cost £20, materials provided.
Drop me an email if you would like to book a place: [email protected]
I had an additional supply of Art Weeks Catalogues last week, also the latest Evolver Magazine with integral Art Weeks supplement. All free so remember to pick up when you next come along if you haven’t already had them.
The Abbotsbury Landscape Art Festival Week (beginning (9th June and headed by John Meaker), has details at www.abbotsburyarts.co.uk
Closed days at my studio are Monday and Wednesday. (Private Viewings can be made by email appointment for anyone who would like to visit the studio on those days).

April 2024 Workshop News
What a great month it’s been for plein air work if you like painting rain, puddles, and mud! Meanwhile, in the shelter of the studio I’ve been doing some more work on my research project with the Salon Group as well as some figure painting and drawing.
The Beginners’ Oil Painting sessions have produced some super work from several artists now beginning to find their feet in this medium (well not literally!) which is really rewarding to see.
The next bookable mixed media session is on the subject of characterisation, with inspiration from the work of the 19th century French painter and sculptor Honore Daumier:
Tuesday 19th March morning session 10 am – 12.30pm (cost £20, materials provided)
If there are sufficient numbers to run a repeat in the afternoon, we can do this from 2 pm to 4.30 pm and still go home in daylight which is super.
Please drop me an email if you would like to book: [email protected]
I’ve been asked about the possibility of evening sessions in the light nights and this is under consideration. It’s very encouraging that there is such interest in making art together.
Quick reminder for Dorset Art Weeks 25th May to 9th June. My studio is Venue 113, look out for the Dorset Arts Week Map and Guide which will be available soon.
Also ‘Abbotsbury Festival of Landscape Art’ starts Sunday June 9th with Open Gardens and runs from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th June. Artistic director is John Meaker with HQ at the Tithe Barn. John is currently working on the brochure for this.
Closed days at my studio remain Monday and Wednesday until Easter although Private Viewings can be made by email appointment for anyone who would like to visit the studio on those days.

February 2024 Workshop News
Although I expected it to be very quiet at Abbey Farm in January, happily, we had plenty of lovely visitors and students who made it a super start to 2024. A surprise visit from Jess Gale, a Dorset artist who you may have seen on a recent episode in the new series of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year was a special treat.
We are now noticing the days getting longer with more light to do early morning sketching. The snowdrops look lovely and I’m able to stay open at the Studio a little longer in the late afternoon which is all very uplifting.
In sad news we have had 2 sudden and unexpected bereavements in January. With the funerals being held in the Midlands there will be some extra closed days in February, and I won’t be able to offer a mixed media workshop this month. Hopefully we will be back to normal next month.
My studio will be a registered venue for Dorset Art Weeks. This runs from 25th May to 9th June. Following the great success of last year’s inaugural ‘Landscape Art Event’ in Abbotsbury, which was part of the Friends of St Nicholas Charity Open Gardens Day, it will be repeated on Sunday June 9th, the closing day of Art Weeks. The HQ will be in the Tithe Barn here at Abbey Farm, Abbotsbury. We are hugely grateful to John Meaker who will again be the Artistic Director and is planning a whole Landscape Art Week of events to follow on from this, running from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th June.
Watch out for more details being announced by The Friends, and from John.
My Salon research group has been making new work inspired by 2 plein air days we spent together at Abbotsbury Swannery, and we hope to hold a join exhibition of the outcomes in the coming months. More news on this when we have it.
Current closed days at my studio remain Monday and Wednesday until Easter.
Private Viewings can be made by email appointment for visitors who would like to see inside the studio on those days.

October 2023 Workshop News
A very warm welcome to all the new followers on the mailing list. It’s been so encouraging to have people signing up and seeing new faces at the sessions as well as the quality of work being produced.
The first plein air Swannery Special was a great success, although, to be fair, it wasn’t completely plein air. The weather was against us but the new classroom provided a perfect shelter to draw and paint what we could see around us. I’m holding another Swannery Special this month, when hopefully we can do some of the session outside but do bring appropriate clothing if you book for this.
Tuesday 10th October £30
Meet at the Swannery entrance at 10 am – introduction at the new classroom.
I will be on site and facilitate until 1pm but you will be able to stay for the whole day if you wish. Paper and some drawing/painting materials will be provided (and tea) but please bring a sketchbook if you have one.
To book a space, please email me on [email protected]
Tuesday 31st October £20 – Observational Drawing/Painting session in my studio at Abbey Farm.
Introduction to theme, warm up work, then longer task. Materials provided.
Please email me on [email protected] if you would like to book a place.
Candles on the Hill – I now have a supply of bags in the studio.
Cost is £2 per bag to take away and decorate (oil pastels work well on the waxed paper).

The flooring repair was completed in time for the Flower Festival and was open to visitors over the August Bank Holiday Weekend. It was a real treat to see the magnificent space restored and to feel a part of its historical significance.
We hope that it will be possible to use the Tithe Barn for Cultural Events that will appeal to the arts community so watch out for more news on this...
Latest News on Parking at Abbey Farm
There are now some spaces available alongside the Abbey Farm pond wall, adjacent to the workshops. These are reserved for people who struggle with mobility. You can also drop off and collect here if you need to.
There are 3 marked blue badge spaces on the other side of the pond, accessible via the track in front of Abbey Farm Flowers and through the gate (marked Private).
Please bear in mind that the gates at Abbey Farm itself will be locked at 4.30 pm. This is for the safety of the site which is Grade 1 listed for its historical and architectural interest.
As Workshop tenants, we are asked by Ilchester Estates to respect this policy and to ask our visitors to park on the main Abbotsbury Village Car Park at Rodden Row. From there it's a short walk down the path alongside the Abbey House Guest House, so no need to walk along the road.
Sorry for any inconvenience - the parking situation is outside of my control.
See you very soon. Keep painting…

August 2023 Workshop News
Thank you to everyone who came to the Exhibition night with Mala Hassett. As contemporary artists, both of us appreciated the opportunity to engage with viewers: in particular the Q and A session.
You may by now have seen that the current parking arrangements at Abbey Farm are that visitors are asked to use the Abbotsbury Village Car Park on Rodden Row, walk down the hill via the path in front of Abbey House, and along the path around the side of the pond.
For disabled visitors there are now some marked spaces in front of The Granary building, accessed from Church Street, just before the entrance to Abbey Farm. For collection of art work I am able to provide pick up access (by temporary removal of a bollard) which will be great in bad weather! I'm really sorry for any inconvenience which is outside of my control.
Workshop Sessions for this month are listed below.
Please can you email me on [email protected] if you would like to book a space:
Wednesday 16th August 11am to 1 pm Observational Drawing £17
Tuesday 22nd August 10am to 1pm Landscape Session (we can go outside if weather permits) £20
As part of the Flower Festival being hosted at Abbey Farm over the Bank Holiday weekend I will be doing
2 Still Life Sessions:-
Saturday 26th August 12 pm to 1.30 pm £15
Sunday 27th August 1 pm to 2.30 pm £15

July 2023 Workshop News
For the first time I will be holding a guest artist exhibition, in collaboration with my research colleague, Mala Hassett, also of The Salon Group, part of Dorset Visual Arts. The event is Wednesday 12th July beginning at 6.30pm with a welcome drink and introduction by myself and Mala. The other workshops at Abbey Farm will also be open late. Please park at The Abbotsbury Village Car Park, Rodden Row, DT3 4JL or at The Swannery, DT3 4JG, if access to Abbey Farm is restricted.
The Landscape Art Festival at Abbotsbury Open Gardens in June was a great success with visitors enjoying the beautifully curated gardens and seeing the artists at work. Many thanks to Helen Millard for initiating and to John Meaker for his professional artistic directorship. Huge thanks also to the hosts at The Manor House, Gate House and East Farm, Abbotsbury, and of course to The Friends of St Nicholas, who managed and planned the whole day’s events which raised over £4000 for the church building fund.
I will be holding a Tuesday Workshop session:
