'Palimpsest 1':
Charcoal on paper, 59.5 cm x 84 cm, Clare Hawkes, 2016 Covering the paper completely with charcoal first, allows a process of rubbing into it and reapplying to give the layering effect of palimpsest. Concerned here with the cinematic, I worked with imagery from the 'Breaking Bad' TV series to give depth and movement to a still image. |
Surface Tension
A series inspired by the black and white Jean Luc Goddard film, 'Breathless'. I looked at ways of obscuring the face and emphasised this by severe cropping as well as the blurred effect, made by rubbing into paper I first covered totally with charcoal marks.
